2/4 Quarterly Update 2022
This is the first quarterly report, starting the new schedule, and name for these updates. The original name of this blog, coma2tri, although aspirational, was wholly unrealistic. So too was the frequency of these updates. The gradualism of my return to workable functionality is such that only quarterly updates could make for entertaining reading.
With that additional recovery time, comes a brand new section which has its maiden outing this month, I enjoyed a visit last month from my brother and his wife, which provided an opportunity to break my 400M record in the Billtal Stadion. Break it I did; smashed it in fact, as you will see later.
Walking
Each morning begins with a short stretch of my hammies. This is followed by some squats -- it started as 100, then I decided, Monday morning, to go barefoot, which saw that drop to 50, with a view to daily increments of 10 -- I did 80 this, Thursday, morning. Next is a 500m stretch on the treadmill. The first of 2, bringing my daily tally to 1K. I find these 500M stretches manageable, but it doesn’t prepare me well for breaking records. I have made up my mind to attend a wedding in August without the wheelchair, so only my trusty cane and Claire for support. I will hopefully have a positive experience, which I look forward to telling you about in the next.
Talking
I have not yet obtained a new speech therapist, but I’m super motivated to work on my tone of voice as it doesn’t go down well, with Oscar. Speaking of which, I will be attending the criminal trial of my assailant, who will hopefully be brought to justice, just 5 years after disabling me. Oscar will come too, so it will be the first Family holiday, as we make a week out of it.
My Eyes
After the disappointment of discovering, earlier this year, that prism glasses were not an option for me, I have seen minimal improvement.
Treadmill; New Record
Strava
Oscar makes it difficult to plan a cycle, but every quarterly update, going forward, should include one.
Peloton: Best Class
Peloton: 20 Minutes Savannah
This is new.
Billtalstadion
I broke my record, but I also changed my task. I had recently forgone a break, but this time I needed one, coming into the last 100M. Jimmy was keeping time, so he decided that pausing the timer was not an option; which meant a shorter break and more flow. I liked it so much, that I have incorporated the no-pause rule for future attempts.
New 400M record: 33:17
Book Recommendation
Jaws is a great read, it's my second time and, maybe it's the brain injury*, but I don't remember it being that good. When it comes to reading books that later became films, I recommend doing the movie first. That way you might be able to enjoy both experiences.
That's certainly true of Jaws. If Spielberg had stuck rigidly to the book, the casting wouldn't have worked as well, for a start.
It has all the tension of the film, especially if you have kids.
*I've found that, since the accident, I've gained an appreciation for a whole host of things, I have a recent memory of being floored by the musical intricacies of Brian Adams, for example.
