Bremen
Last weekend we, Claire and I, went to the 3rd day of the 6-Day cycling in Bremen. It was bought for me, by Claire, for X-mas and we had a wonderful time, I'll be back. We arrived late-ish on Friday after getting the train, following rehab. We didn't have tickets for the Friday, but we had booked a table for two at 8pm in Topaz, which was near the Radisson so after a quick turnaround at our room we were off, for a quick pre-dinner drink in the very impressive, and uncharacteristically German, hotel bar.
My weekend trip to Bremen helped me realise that Germany really has a lot to offer. If city trips are your thing, Germany's your place. Great outdoors? Likewise, I can recommend Bavaria in particular. English is a Germanic language, so you should, I hope, pick the lingo up relatively quickly. So, if you have a career that travels well, or if you just fancy a holiday somewhere a bit different, why not just do it?
Topaz, this is a high-end restaurant quite near Boettcherstrasse. It's brightly lit and the waiting staff can make you feel at home. I started with the Ziegenkaese, or goat's cheese, which appetised me satisfactorily. For my main I had the Mohn-Spaetzle, Mohn are poppy-seeds, that was disappointing, as Claire had opted for the Seitan-Gulasch, which dwarfed mine in terms of taste and smell. There were mushrooms served with my Spaetzle, saving the day, but I found the dish lacked the character of Claire's. For dessert I had a Nougat-Nuss(nut)-Tarte, which was incredible.
We started Saturday with a brunch in a local crepe restaurant. As it was brunch I afforded myself a savoury, followed by a sweet, snickers crepe. Needless to say, brunch was excellent. After brunch, we checked out the Bremen Kunsthalle. After a quick scurry through that, we were ready to make our way to Staendige Vertretetung for our delicious early Abendessen. Like any German city, Bremen is very well served by a rail network, but Claire had strategically picked our hotel to be a wheelchair friendly distance from everything we would visit.
The atmosphere was strange at the cycling, The velodrome didn't quite go with the nightclub vibe, so much so that I even felt a little sorry for our entertainer, she had come 2nd in some season of Germany's Next Top Model. After much ado, we were finally ushered to our watching place which, as you can see, was a place from which, we could watch the cycling. The cycling was, undeniably, thrilling but not more than it would have been at home.
