Neurorehabilitation from the Trenches: October, 2021

As will become customary, this October update comes one month late, which means I will submit the following month's update in a few weeks, in order to get back on top of things. No problem.

Walking

Walking is proving difficult, especially with the Weinachtsmarkt, self-imposed deadline for independent cane walking looming. I will therefore scrap that deadline, in favour of next xmas, as a more achievable goal. It won't be for the lack of trying, as you will see, with the following regime, I've been using.

Every morning I do some stretches in the bed before I get up. I then go downstairs for breakfast and coffee. I eat my breakfast then hop on the treadmill, for 15 minutes or 500 meters, whichever guarantees that I cover 500 meters. As soon as I compose myself, following said exertions, I grab my cane and do 10 "lengths", as they're affectionately called. They are, in fact, walking from my seat, down as far as the recliner (circa. 15 Meters), then walking back. It's nerve racking, and a good use of my newly acquired knee pads. On finishing my last length, I continue my walk up the stairs to my office to begin work at 9am. I then do my hourly squats-with-balance-training. Then, in the evening, we have only recently started this, Claire and I drive to some walk-able-in-30-minutes stretch, where we park up. Claire then encourages me to walk for half an hour. The emphasis is on posture and speed. That's my usual daily training*. This all takes place together with my approximately, weekly liegerad and Peloton training.

*I also do 10 additional lengths at lunchtime.

Eyes

The good news is that I have an appointment to get fitted for my prism glasses. The bad news is that I'll have to wait until March 2022! It better be worth the wait.

Talking

Nothing to report here, but I'm trying to be heard more, in my subtle way.

Book Recommendation

This month I'll urge you to get your hands on a copy of this. It was recommended to me, by a colleague, and I'm paying it forward. It reads like an application for a position as chief Philanthropist-without-boarders, in charge of the environment. The anti-vaxxers will hate this, but he should have the gig. It fills one with optimism about our future, and refreshes one's attitude and enthusiasm for the project we are all sadly on.

Treadmill

I won't post a pic of my 500M walk every month. Instead, I'll post a pic of my distance record, which I'll try to break every month.
